(Jesus) woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Quiet! Be still!"
The wind ceased and there was great calm.
Then he asked them, "Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?"
They were filled with great awe and said to one another,
"Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?"
-Mark 4: 39-41
In this Gospel passage, Jesus calms a storm that is raging around his disciples and their boats. Most of us may not spend a lot of time in boats, but we are not immune from other "storms" that may come into our lives. A death in the family, loss of a job, relationship breakdown, or health issues are just some of the many "storms" that might surround us. It is in these moments that Jesus asks for our faith the most.
Summer is often a time of rest and relaxation, particularly for those in school or working in the educational system. For others, our schedules may be lighter with fewer activities or a slower work schedule. Let us use this time to recommit our faith in Jesus, and to pray for those who may be going through a storm in their lives.
